Poul Kjærholm’s Chair
PKO Chair
Poul Kjærholm was a celebrated Danish furniture designer. His work, such as Sofabord (coffee table), are recognized by their low profiles, elegant forms, and frequent use of steel. Born on January 8, 1929 in Øster Vrå, Denmark, Kjærholm studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, before rising to prominence during the 1950s. In 1958, he created the now-famous PK 22 chair and PK 24 long chair for the Formes Scandinaves exhibition in Paris. He was appointed as an assistant professor and lecturer at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts a year later. Today, his works are touted as among the most innovative of mid-century Scandinavian design, with pieces included in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Kjærholm died on April 18, 1980 in Hillerød, Denmark.
